LI-ION TECHNOLOGY
LI-ION TECHNOLOGY
Overview
Li-Ion BESS are experiencing rapid growth in both numbers and capacity size
Key markets include California and Australia, where BESS facilitates can support greater build-out of wind and solar projects by providing ancillary services to maintain the stability of the electricity grid
BESS can also allow “load shifting” by storing excess wind or solar power when consumer demand is low, and discharge when demand is higher than supply
(e.g. in the evening)
The largest currently planned BESS facilities are 500 MWh+ in capacity and utilize
Li-Ion cells combined in “modules” with individual power management and fault protection systems
Facilities are either located outdoor, or inside large warehouses, and are often
co-located at solar farms
There is no universal type certification standard for BESS (such as IEC 61400 for
wind turbines)
