Cables run from modules to combiner boxes, combiner boxes to inverters, inverters to transformers and have different ratings.
They may be DC or AC, and incorporate fibreoptic cores for SCADA data transmission.
Failures may occur during construction due to improper handling, installation or accidental damage by digging operations.
During plant operations, cable theft is a recurrent problem due to the high copper content of power cables. Reducing this risk requires good site security, monitoring (e.g. via infrared and CCTV) and encasing cables in concrete in extreme cases (although this makes repairs more expensive).
